In 2020, my longtime collaborator Patrick-Tice-Carroll and I arranged and recorded our version of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” from separate covid-safe booths connected by rivers of cables and camera feeds from across his surburban basement. It was an especially poignant topic that winter, and I was adamant about using the original bleak lyrics rather than the cheerier newer ones. “Someday soon, we all will be together, if the fates allow. Until then, we’ll have to muddle through somehow.”

Both big fans of folk music, Patrick and I channeled a Ben Howard-esque instrumentation while staying true to the jazz backgrounds of both ourselves and the song. Patrick’s harpejji as the lead instrument gives it a bit of an outer-space vibe, as do the stacks of background vocals.
